#TIDE OCEAN MATERIAL PRESENTS A SOLUTION TO FIGHT PLASTIC POLLUTION

“According to the U.N., eight million tons of plastic enter the ocean every year – that is a truckload every minute," founder Thomas Schori says. Together with the Swiss University OST, #tide developed a method to turn ocean-bound plastic waste into quality granules and yarns, which then can be used for the creation of new products.

AN AWARD-WINNING PARTNER

Within its first 3 years, the spin-off from Swiss based Braloba Group has not only been awarded several times for its groundbreaking technology, but also for its sustainable business model: Everyone within the supply chain benefits from the added value: The fishermen are being paid for the kilo plastic as they were for the kilo fish. #tide creates new jobs in developing countries, be it Thailand or Mexico, for workers in social enterprises who are sorting the waste before #tide is upcycling and compounding the flakes. The result is a new raw material in form of pellets. Beside the social and environmental impact, #tide also creates added value in terms of story telling: Companies that are distributing and using the material benefit from the marketing impact: Protecting the ocean by using recycling plastic is a benefit for fauna, flora and for business, too.

EVERY BOTTLE DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE

#TIDE OCEAN MATERIAL GIVES WASTE A VALUE

#tide’s global solution of giving waste a value was recently honored with the Swiss Ethics Award 2022. Since the first granules hit the market 3 years ago, brands such as Maurice Lacroix, Tom Ford, Hugo Boss, Meister or Winter have created products and rely on the quality and transparency that #tide provides. A material passport proves the origin of the material, certifications such as OBP or GRS furthermore underline #tide’s credibility and ethical approach.

FOR A MULTITUDE OF APPLICATIONS

There are virtually no limits regarding the application of #tide ocean material, be it PET, PP, HDPE or LDPE: from eyeglasses and watches to apparel, carpets, automotive parts or furniture – just anything is feasible. Recently, for example, a spaghetti chair from the traditional Swiss brand Schaffner was launched with polyester cords made from marine plastic. "That makes us very happy, of course. Because it not only creates less waste, but also protects the climate," the founder says.

POLICYMAKERS SET NEW FRAMEWORK CONDITIONS

As new political regulations push companies to use recycled polymers and reduce their carbon footprints, #tide is in the right place at the right time:  An external study by Carbotech and Myclimate.org recently came to the conclusion that #tide’s ocean-bound rPET causes 80 percent less CO2 emissions than the production of new plastic. The positive effect on the environment is striking. And to reduce transportation, #tide is expanding fast, with its head offices in Switzerland, but also subsidiaries and offices in Thailand, Hong Kong, USA and Mexico.

THE CONCEPT IS WORKING OUT FINE

The company is both, a material supplier and a strong label for social and environmental sustainability and transparency. The ultimate goal? To free the oceans from plastic. To achieve this, #tide recently launched the program “Road to 1 billion bottles”, inviting corporations to help saving millions of plastic bottles with direct contributions. By doing so, #tide is able to increase the impact and to decrease the costs of their products. A win-win situation: for the environment and for a sustainable business.
