MOVE TO GREEN
LEUNA HARZE has added an environmentally friendly alternative to the existing synthesis route based on crude oil-based polypropylene in the production of its epoxy resin: With the construction of an additional production plant and the use of glycerine, which is based on used cooking oil and fat, rapeseed and other vegetable oils, as well as by-products of biodiesel production, the raw material consumption for epoxy resin is reduced considerably and CO2 emissions are cut by up to 50%.
BIO-BASED EPOXY RESINS AND REACTIVE DILUENTS
The Epilox® G series comprises bisphenol A and bisphenol F epoxy resins and reactive diluents that contain a bio-based carbon content. Bio-based epichlorohydrin, which is produced at the LEUNA-Harze GmbH site on the basis of glycerine, is used in the production process. The glycerine used is a by-product of biodiesel production.
The bio-based epoxy resins and reactive diluents offer the same mechanical properties, chemical resistance and processing characteristics as the corresponding Epilox® analogs. Use in existing applications is therefore possible in most cases without modification or adaptation of the production process.
LIFE-CYCLE ASSESSMENT (LCA) - REDUCTION OF CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS
As part of the MOVE-TO-GREEN strategy, LEUNA-Harze GmbH commissioned the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research Heidelberg (Ifeu) to carry out a life cycle assessment of selected epoxy resins and reactive diluents in accordance with the LCA standards DIN EN ISO 14040/14044.
The study included a detailed assessment of the life cycle of the epoxy resins and reactive diluents from the production of the raw materials used to the LEUNA-Harze GmbH factory gate (cradle-to-gate approach).
The results consistently showed lower CO2 emissions in the production of bio-based epoxy resins and reactive diluents compared to petrochemical-based products. Based on the knowledge gained, influencing factors of greenhouse gas emissions during production can be further analyzed and optimized in the future.
